I knew there was a game on but I couldn’t tell you about the play or who scored; Matilda was sitting about four feet from me and that’s all I could concentrate on. That and trying not to look at her all the time. Fuck, it was torture, and I know, I’ve been tortured. I haven’t worked this hard in years. I just wanted to push Daniel out of the way, grab her and carry her into that bedroom with the white quilt and pillows and dirty them, so to speak. Worst game ever. God my balls are seriously blue. This had to stop.

We had a few drinks then stopped to make sure we could drive home later that night. I used to always crash at Nick’s place or vice versa but I wasn’t crashing on the couch with Matilda in the next room, and there’s no third bedroom. Bummer.

Given our team had a sizeable lead, Matilda left in the fourth quarter to shower, Daniel headed home straight after the game finished, and I stayed to help Nick clean up – yeah so Machiavellian of me. I don’t know how the discussion started, but we got on to Daniel and the internationals. I remembered Nick asking about extensions to their contract.

‘I don’t know how long he can stay or if he wants to stay,’ I said referring to Daniel’s contract, ‘but I’m not sure what the arrangement is for internationals in other departments like Orla and Matilda.’

‘He could always marry one of his harem if he wanted to stay longer,’ Nick joked. I hadn’t thought of that and suddenly I wondered. Matilda said she was over men, but she was over here getting away from a relationship, I knew that much. She wouldn’t be planning on trying to secure love to stay here. No. Would she?

‘I guess they could all be here trying to get permanent green cards,’ I said, not believing that to be true. ‘It’d be an easy way in, you know romance a local...’

I heard a movement behind me and turned to see Matilda standing there, staring at me. She gave a laugh that sounded anything but happy.

‘I can promise you guys that I have no intention of marrying anyone for a green card,’ she said, crossing her hands across her chest, ‘and after my year is up, I’m hoping to go to the UK for a year before I head home. So relax, you can sleep at night now.’

‘No! We know that,’ I quickly responded trying to backtrack. I couldn’t remember my exact words and I don’t know what she had heard. ‘We were just talking about extending Daniel’s contract.’ I looked at Nick for him to say something miraculous.

‘Yeah, besides, we might be after you and Orla for a Commonwealth passport,’ he teased. ‘I reckon I could master the Australian accent, mate,’ he said, in the worst sounding Australian accent.

Matilda grinned at him with real affection. ‘Yeah, that might take some work yet. Well, thank you for a fun night, thank you for cooking, Nick.
